Emily

Eleven years ago, my family sat in a Central Baptist waiting room, awaiting the news that my little sister, Emily, had been born.  While the news did come, it came in a way we couldn’t have expected.  We were told that she had Down syndrome, and had severe heart problems.  Suddenly, our crazy day became much crazier.  Since then, Emily has been in two body casts, had countless surgeries, and has nevertheless amazed everyone she comes across.  She may take longer to learn something than her peers at school; but she’s extremely intelligent, and that’s inarguable.  She may not be a star athlete, but no one could ever argue that when she plays baseball with her team, she’s out there having fun, not concerned in the least about the score. For Emily, its nothing but a number.  Through all of her hardships, through all of her trials and tribulations, Emily has never failed to amaze everyone she comes into contact with because of her gentle spirit and persevering nature.  She has more challenges and obstacles in her life than most, but she’s determined: she won’t be overtaken by them. Instead, she’ll defeat them, and live a life equally as meaningful and important and fulfilling as anyone else. And I’d even venture to say she’ll enjoy her life and help others more than others will.
