Miracle Child!
by Alissa Ramirez“Can’t live with them, can’t live without them” brothers make life crazy and exciting. I have a little brother named Julian, who is eight years old and has a disabilit
y calledDown Syndrome. Because of his down syndrome he has an extra chromosome and it takes him just a bit longer to comprehend what people tell him, but he keeps on pushing and never quits!
I was seven and a half years old when Julian was born. When he was born the doctors told us he had Down syndrome, two holes in his heart, kidney problems, was hardly breathing, and weighed about 4 pounds. All the doctors told us that they were doing their best and most likely he would never walk, talk, laugh, sing, play, dance, run or anything. Hearing this worried all of us, but especially me. I had been an only child and now I finally had a little brother that I could hang out and play with and now the doctors told me he may not live!? I was devastated. I knew this could not be happening, so I began to pray. Every night before I went to bed I asked God to watch over Julian and help him get better.
After Julian was born, he had to stay in the hospital for three consecutive months. Before going into his room to see him, we had to wash our hands, put on gloves, and a face mask to be on the safe side. One day I decided to go to the hospital to visit him. When I got there, I went to his crib and stood next to him. I leaned over on my tip-toes and placed my hand in his crib to reach his hand. With his little hand, he grabbed my index finger and held it in his palm, looked up and gave me a smile. After this I knew God had answered my prayers and Julian was going to get better.
Julian has become my best friend! He has taught me to love, have patience, enjoy life, and to live everyday like it is your last, because you never know when God will call you back home. Julian has overcome everything the doctors said he would never accomplish. He loves dancing, singing, running, playing, and enjoys life to the fullest. He currently is in the second grade and is doing extremely well. Through all of his hardships, through all of his trials and tribulations, Julian has never failed to amaze everyone he comes into contact with because of his gentle spirit and persevering nature.
