"My daughter Lindsey has been so fortunate to be a part of the College Bound classes that have been offered to her through DSACK. Lindsey has participated in the Public Speaking class, where all the students did exceptionally well with their presentations in front of the class. The Nutrition and Wellness class was certainly enjoyable as well by all the students. Lindsey learned to make healthy food choices and loved cooking with her group. The professors at BCTC have been incredibly wonderful, enhancing the students’ confidence and self-esteem. Lindsey has certainly learned a lot and has enjoyed the socialization. She looks forward to her class each week!
DSACK works with Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington to create adapted, noncredit courses on a variety of relevant topics. Students attend one class for eight weeks on one of BCTC’s Lexington campuses. They follow a syllabus determined by a full-time professor and are assessed throughout the course to monitor their comprehension and knowledge of the topic. Each student produces a final project related to the area of study to demonstrate what they have learned.
In addition to broadening their knowledge, courses contribute to their self-advocacy, independent living, and personal development skills. Several of our students have gone on to use their knowledge and skills to visit state and national legislators, give presentations at local schools and hospitals, and volunteer in their community.
DSACK partners with BCTC to offer one class per semester on various topics. In addition, weekly study groups are offered to help students review materials, complete assignments, and prepare for tests and/or presentations. As with everything DSACK does, this program is FREE thanks grants from community partners and funds derived from our DSACK fundraisers, including our Fall Family Fun Day & Walk, Nothing Down About It Gala, and Down With Dares digital scavenger hunt. Upcoming class information and dates can be found on our website calendar.
